MISO survey indicates potential capability deficit from 2025

A survey by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and Organization of MISO States (OMS) launched on Thursday revealed prospective capability deficit beginning in the 2025/26 planning year.

MISO, handling the grid throughout parts or all of 15 states in the West, Midwest and the South, said that resource sufficiency next summer season could vary from a 2.7 GW capability shortfall to a 1.1 GW surplus.

The operator pointed out a requirement to speed up resource additions, keep track of big load additions, and delay resource retirements to reliably handle the expected development in electricity need.

This year's study consists of prospective brand-new large load additions such as data centers and manufacturing sites. It likewise takes into account robust long-term development driven by financial development initiatives and rising electrification. MISO cautioned that these elements, if understood without corresponding boosts in capacity additions, could result in additional capacity deficiencies within the MISO region.
