Media report: Germany issues an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian diver in Nord Stream investigation

According to a Wednesday report from three German media outlets, Germany issued a European Arrest Warrant against a Ukrainian dive instructor who allegedly belonged to a team which blew up Nord Stream's gas pipelines.

German investigators believe that the man who lived last in Poland was one of those divers who placed explosive devices on pipelines from Russia to Germany running under the Baltic Sea, in September 2022. The SZ and Die Zeit papers, along with the ARD, cited unnamed sources.

The German Prosecutor General's Office declined to comment on the report.

The report stated that Germany asked Poland to arrest this man in June.

The Polish National Public Prosecutor's Office has not yet commented on this matter.

Spiegel reported on Wednesday that security sources believed the suspect had left Poland.

According to SZ Zeit and ARD, a second man and woman - both Ukrainian diving instructors – have been identified as part of the German investigation into suspected sabotage. However, no arrest warrants for either have yet been issued.

The explosions that destroyed the three out of four gas pipelines remain a mystery. They became a controversial sign of Germany's reliance on Russian Gas in the aftermath of Moscow's invasion in Ukraine in February 2022.

Both Russia and the West accuse each other of being responsible for the explosions. No one has claimed responsibility and each has denied any involvement.

The Swedish investigation found explosive residue on several items recovered from the explosion sites, confirming that the explosions were deliberate.

In January 2023 Germany raided an alleged explosives-carrying ship and informed the United Nations it believed that trained divers had attached devices to pipelines between 70 and 80 meters deep.
