Sri Lanka scrambles for power restoration after monkey causes islandwide blackout

Sri Lanka continued its power outages for a third consecutive day on Thursday, as it worked to restore the national grid's full capacity. A monkey had caused a blackout that affected 22 million islanders over the weekend.

Kumara Jayakody blamed an outage that lasted six hours on Sunday on a monkey who disrupted a Grid Station in a Colombo suburban area. On Wednesday, a Sri Lankan holiday, there were no power cuts.

The monkey had come into contact the transformer at the power station, disrupting the supply of electricity to the whole country. The monkey's fate is not known at this time.

Ceylon Electricity Board, the state-owned power monopoly on the island, said in a press release that one-hour power cut will be implemented at 6 pm (1230 GMT).

CEB reported that the Sunday disruption affected the island's sole 900 MW coal-fired power plant. It forced it to operate on a safe mode.

The CEB added that "all efforts are being made in order to restore the grid back to full capacity, but power cuts will also be implemented to manage the peak demand during the night hours."

To manage the demand, 90-minute power cuts on Monday and Tuesday were implemented. The energy ministry is investigating the cause of the power outage. Reporting by Uditha Jayasinghe, Editing by YPrajesh and Bernadettebaum
