Trump wants the Keystone XL Pipeline built

Donald Trump, the Republican U.S. president, said Monday that he wants the Keystone XL Pipeline to be built. He pledged quick regulatory approvals for this project. Environmentalists had opposed it for years before the Biden Administration revoked its permit.

The pipeline, which was originally proposed in 2008 for the purpose of bringing oil from Canada's Western tar sands into U.S. refining facilities, was halted by TC Energy Corp in 2021 after then Democratic President Joe Biden revoked a permit required for a U.S. segment of the project.

In a post on social media, Trump said that his administration would provide easy approvals as well as a fast start.

"The Trump Administration (from the Biden Administration) is very different - easy approvals, and almost immediate start!" Then perhaps another Pipeline Company. Trump wrote in his post: "We want the Keystone XL Pipeline to be built."

Trump's tweet did not mention a specific company, but only mentioned the one who was building the pipeline at the time.

TC Energy spun-off its oil pipeline business into a brand new company called South Bow Energy in October of last year.

The opponents of this pipeline fought against its construction for many years, claiming it was unneeded and would hinder the U.S.'s transition to cleaner fuels.

Keystone XL was supposed to transport 830,000 barrels of Alberta oil sands to Nebraska every day, but it was delayed by U.S. landowners as well as Native American tribes and environmentists.

Trump approved the permit in 2017, but construction was hampered by legal issues. Biden pledged to cancel the project in his 2020 campaign, and then revoked it shortly after assuming office in 2021. (Reporting by Kanishka Singh; Editing by Sandra Maler)
