Amprion, a German grid company, increases its five-year investment in renewables to 36.4 billion euros

Amprion, a German grid company, announced on Thursday that it will increase its investment in its transmission network to 40 billion euros in five years, up to 2029. This is to upgrade the lines and cables to allow for renewable electricity transmission.

The amount represents a 32.4% rise from the 27.5 billion euro in the previous five-year rolling plan published last year.

"We are well-positioned with our funding strategy," said CEO Christoph Mueller. He was referring to an 850 million euro increase in capital in late 2024, by shareholders including power utility RWE.

Amprion, along with three other German companies in the sector, operate within a framework of regulations for upgrading power lines and equipment that reach wind and solar generator sites and transports their output to customers.

It runs 11,000 kilometres of high-voltage transmission lines from the North Sea all the way to the Alps.

Germany's energy sector is to be made 100% green by the year 2035.

Grid usage fees, regulated by the network regulator and accounting for one quarter of retail electricity bills, are the main way consumers pay transmission system operator costs.

Amprion reported that its adjusted earnings, before interest and tax, rose by 25.1% to 1.2 billion Euros last year.

It warned that despite its financial strength it was still a small company

The regulator will need to improve the system for the period beyond 2029.
