US offers last-minute reprieve from sanctions to Serbian oil company, according to President Vucic

BELGRADE (Feb. 27) - According to President Aleksandar Vucic, a U.S. Treasury report, the United States has lifted sanctions on Serbian Oil Company NIS for 30 days. The company is owned by Russian companies, and operates the only oil refinery in Serbia.

Vucic uploaded a picture of the document to his Instagram page. It was not possible to confirm it immediately.

We got an extra 30 days of NIS. Vucic wrote in his blog: "This is great news for Serbian citizens."

On January 10, the United States imposed sanctions on Russia's petroleum sector and gave Russian oil company Gazprom a deadline of Thursday morning for it to sell its NIS shares.

Gazprom Neft transferred around 5% shares of NIS to its parent Gazprom on Wednesday.

Serbia would benefit from a reprieve in sanctions. NIS provides crude oil and derivatives of gas to about 80% the retail market in Serbia.

If sanctions are imposed, Croatian pipeline operator Janaf will not be able to import crude through its system.

Since the deadline has passed, the United States have not yet made a public comment. The United States has not yet publicly commented since the deadline expired.
