Bangladesh receives offers to purchase 50,000 T of rice

The lowest price in the tender that Bangladesh's state grain buyer offered to buy 50,000 metric tonnes of rice, which closed on Monday, was $471.60 per metric ton CIF liners out.

They said that offers are still being considered, and no purchases have yet been reported.

Bangladesh takes a while to consider the price of grain and rice before making a final decision.

The traders claimed that the lowest offer is believed to have come from trading house Sael Agri.

The new tender is seeking price offers for nonbasmati parboiled risotto in CIF terms including ship unloading charges, for shipment to Chattogram and Mongla ports.

Other companies that participated in the tender with their estimated offer per ton of liner out were: Bagadiya Brothers, Pattabhi Agro Foods, Aditya Birla, $474.99 and Agrocorp, $474.74.

The reports reflect the opinions of traders, and it is still possible to estimate prices and volume later.

Bangladesh is a major buyer on international markets, after the floods that devastated the country between August and October inflicted damage to an estimated 1.1 millions tons of rice. The data provided by the Agriculture Ministry led the country to increase imports to counter the rising food prices.

Bangladesh, which is the third largest rice producer in the world, produces approximately 40 million tons per year to feed a population of around 170 million. Natural disasters often disrupt the production, leading to an increase in imports.

The rice that was sought in the Monday tender can be imported from anywhere in the world, and shipment must take place 40 days after award of contract.

On Monday, traders reported that Bangladesh had also released another tender for 50,000 tonnes of rice. The bid will close on December 2. Michael Hogan reported. Mark Potter (Editing)
