The Chinese Special Administrative Region is trying to boost its economy and revive international appeal following three years of strict COVID regulations that ended in 2023.

In a press release, the government stated that this increase was due to an influx of 21,000 net newcomers. The number of new-borns increased by 11% to 36,700.

The government stated that "continuing to benefit from different measures on talent recruitment and labour importation," many people will continue to move to Hong Kong in 2024 from the mainland China and other parts of the world.

Beijing's reputation has also suffered from the anti-government protests of 2019 and Beijing's rapid imposition in 2020 of a comprehensive national security law.

Hong Kong's rise in population comes after China's population dropped for the third year running in 2024.
