China wants to eradicate severe air pollution by this year

China is aiming to eliminate severe air pollution in China by 2025. This comes as the authorities intensify efforts on pollution control and emission reductions in the "battle of blue skies."

Li Tianwei said that China would improve its air quality prediction and early warning system and enhance coordinated management of harmful particles in the air known as PM2.5 as well as ozone pollutants.

Li, according to an online transcript posted on Monday by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment website, said that "the battle for blue skies is still ongoing."

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that despite some progress, air pollution is still a serious problem in China. It affects the economy and the quality of life for people.

WHO says that air pollution causes about 2,000,000 deaths annually in China. The WHO said that ambient air pollution was responsible for more than one million of these deaths. Household air pollution due to cooking using polluting technologies and fuels also caused another million deaths.

According to the WHO, air pollution is considered severe when PM2.5 concentrations exceed 50 micrograms/cubic metre.

Li stated that China's air pollution improved dramatically in 2024. The average concentration in cities of PM2.5 was 29,3 micrograms/cubic metre. This represents a 2.7% decrease from the previous year.

The percentage of days with good quality air has increased by 1.7 points on an annual basis.

Li added that China will increase the use of energy-efficient vehicles and machinery at airports, ports, and logistics parks.

The authorities also plan to promote long-distance transport of bulk goods via rail and water rather than roads.

President Xi Jinping said that China prioritizes environmental protection and promotes green lifestyles. He also stated that conserving nature is an important part of building a socialist modern country. (Reporting and editing by Farah master;
