Brazil tightens up guidelines to restore energy distribution concessions

The Brazilian government released on Thursday tighter standards for the extension of energy distribution contracts, easing the innovative cancellation of concessions and allowing the country to limit pay from firms that do not comply with the rules.

The energy ministry has been working considering that 2022 on the standards, which impact global energy groups such as Italy's Enel and Portugal's EDP, as they are amongst the 20 concession agreements ending by 2031 - the standards timeframe.

The new rules are aligned with government hopes that tightening up the enforcement for distributors would require business to supply much better services, after climatic events in Brazil left millions of individuals without power in some huge cities in the last few months.

In case of non-compliance with the contract, we are permitting the early expiration of the concession or an intervention, energy minister Alexandre Silveira informed reporters at an occasion to present the guidelines in Brasilia.

The launch of the guidelines was postponed about 5 months from its previous deadline.
