Rhine River shipping is hampered by low water levels

Commodity traders reported on Tuesday that low water levels following recent dry weather prevent cargo vessels from sailing on the Rhine River in Germany fully loaded. Surcharges will be added to the normal freight rates.

Traders said that low water levels are hampering shipping along the entire river, south of Duisburg, Cologne and the chokepoint at Kaub.

Cargo vessels at Kaub can only be about half full.

In order to compensate for the fact that vessels are not fully loaded when sailing, vessel operators will increase freight rates. This increases costs for cargo owners. The river was too shallow in March due to the dry weather.

They said that the dry weather forecast for next week in river basins means there is no immediate improvement in sight.

The Rhine is a major shipping route for grains, minerals and ores. It also carries coal, oil products including heating oil, as well as other commodities.

German companies were faced with production and supply problems in the summer of 2022, after a heatwave and drought caused unusually low levels of water on the Rhine. (Reporting and editing by Kirsten Doovan, Thomas Seythal and Michael Hogan)
