Five UK environment protesters jailed for conspiracy to block major roadway

5 environment activists from the Just Stop Oil demonstration group were each imprisoned for at least four years on Thursday over a conspiracy to block London's M25 motorway, marking the longest sentences ever enforced for a. nonviolent demonstration in Britain.

The five-- including Just Stop Oil co-founder Roger Hallam--. were charged with conspiracy to cause a public nuisance over a. demonstration where activists disrupted traffic by climbing up gantries. above the freeway in November 2022.

The prosecution comes amidst a broader crackdown on protest. movements in Britain and across Europe.

The 5 pleaded not guilty but were convicted last week. after a trial at London's Southwark Crown Court marked by. disorderly scenes, with some accuseds detained in court for. defying the judge's judgments on their evidence.

Judge Christopher Hehir said there had actually been an. extraordinary level of intentional disturbance and suggested. Hallam, who he stated was jailed 3 times, tried to turn the. trial into a piece of direct action protest.

Protesters who held placards outside the court were also. detained for alleged contempt of court, though Hehir stated the. proceedings versus the 11 who were detained had been dropped.

Prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward said the economic expense of the. protests was at least 770,000 pounds ($ 1 million) and triggered. delays for countless people.

Hehir said that this was a conspiracy to trigger severe and. out of proportion interruption, adding: Each of you has some time. ago crossed the line from concerned campaigner to fanatic.

You have designated yourselves as the sole arbiters about. what must be done about climate modification.

Hallam, 58, was sentenced to five years in prison. The four. other offenders, aged in between 22 and 58, were sentenced to 4. years each.
