Cycling-Del Toro wins stage 17 and extends Giro Lead

Isaac Del Toro, of UAE Team Emirates - XRG, continued his excellent form in the Giro d'Italia by winning stage 17 on Wednesday with a perfectly timed sprint. The Mexican's stage win was his first of the race and allowed him to extend his overall lead.

The 155 km route from San Michele all'Adige in Italy to Bormio on Tuesday was not as punishing, but it featured two tough climbs -- Passo del Tonale (passo del mortirolo) and Passo del Tonale -- totalling 3,800 metres.

Del Toro, the youngest man in the field at the end of this final ascent, broke away with less than two kilometers to go from rival Richard Carapaz and Picnic-PostNL's Romain Bardet.

Bardet was four seconds behind Del Toro and Carapaz third.

Del Toro’s stunning effort gave new life to his bid for a Grand Tour win and dispelled any doubts after the pink-shirt holder saw his advantage shrink during a chaotic 16th stage on Tuesday.

"I imagined I could win an entire stage wearing the maglia-rosa. "The Giro has been great so far," said the 21-year old after his victory.

The fight for the podium has been incredible. Today, I realized that I would never give up. I will never give up. I have nothing at stake. Today was no easier than yesterday. We expected that the Mortirolo would be attacked by the team.

"We didn't wish to see all of the GC riders leave. I crossed to them and took it a little easy. I caught them on the descent. "We had agreed with the team to attack the last small ascent."

Del Toro now leads the general classification by 41 seconds. He is only the second Mexican after Julio Alberto Perez Cuapio to have won a stage in the Giro d'Italia in 2001 and 2002.

Simon Yates, a Briton from Visma-Lease a Bike, finished the stage fourth, 15 seconds after Del Toro.

On Wednesday, both Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) as well as Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla), the stage eight winner (both abandoned the Giro).

The stage 18 on Thursday will be mostly flat, covering 144 km from Morbegno up to Cesano Maderno. Aadi Nair in Bengaluru, Clare Fallon edited the story.
