Syria purchased unknown quantity of wheat at tender, traders claim

European traders reported on Tuesday that a state grain buyer in Syria purchased an undetermined volume of soft-milling wheat during an international tender for about 100,000 metric tonnes.

There are no further details available at this time.

The deadline to submit price offers was set at 10 March. Previously, the agency had told traders that it would take a final decision within 15 business days after the closing of the tender.

On March 20, traders had stated that they were still considering price offers.

One European trader stated that "a purchase was made, but the amount is unknown. There seem to be offers from Middle Eastern and Black Sea firms despite the uncertainty regarding the financial system of Syria after the change in government."

The contract stipulated that shipment must be made within 30 days of the award. Payment was offered at 80% upon arrival of grains and 20% 15 days later.

The announcement is believed by traders to be the largest tender for large purchases since the change in power in Syria at the end of last year.

The seller could choose to source the wheat from any origin.

The usual currency used for international grain markets is the U.S. dollar. The former government of Syria refused to accept transactions in dollars, and instead offered payment in euro. (Reporting and editing by Ed Osmond, Michael Hogan)
