Bulgartransgaz: Bulgaria will increase its capacity to import gas to Greece by 50% in the next year

Bulgartransgaz, the gas transmission operator in Bulgaria, announced on Monday that Bulgaria would increase its capacity for importing gas from Greece to 8 billion cubic metres (bcm), or 50% per year.

Bulgartransgaz has done its job. By the end of this calendar year, we will increase our entry capacity to Bulgaria by 50%. This will hopefully lead to an increase in total capacity between Greece and Bulgaria to 8 bcm/year very soon. The LNG will be available on the market from January 2026," Bulgartransgaz CEO Vladimir Malinov told the Budapest LNG Conference.

Gas from Greek ports is supplied to Bulgaria via the Gas Interconnector Greece - Bulgaria natural gas pipeline.

In April 2022, Russia stopped gas deliveries to EU-member Bulgaria after Sofia refused payment in roubles. Sofia has increased its efforts since to protect against disruptions in supply.

He said that Bulgaria plans to also double its capacity for shipping gas to Romania in the next year.

Malinov stated that "in July next year, we will double our capacity from Bulgaria into Romania. This will result in more than 11 billion cubic meters of capacity for exits." (Reporting and writing by Marek Stzelecki in Budapest, Marwa Rashad is London, and Susan Fenton is the editor)
