Turkmenistan president will visit EU to discuss energy, EU ambassador reports

The ambassador of the European Union to Ashgabat announced on Tuesday that Turkmenistan’s president was preparing to make an official trip to Brussels, as the European Parliament discussed ratification for a long-stalled partnership agreement with Central 'Asian State.

Beata Peksa, EU Ambassador, said at a briefing held with Turkmenistan’s deputy minister of foreign affairs, Myahri byashimova that a date had not been set for the visit of President Serdar Berndymukhamedov, but energy was on the agenda.

Turkmenistan is a largely desert country with a population of 7 million. It has the fourth largest reserves of gas in the world and is looking to diversify its markets. The majority of Turkmen gas is currently exported to China.

Peksa said that the EU is looking to import green power?from Turkmenistan. The?Asian Development Bank has stated in 2022 that Turkmenistan has a major solar energy potential.

Construction of energy infrastructure across Caspian Sea is required to import Turkmenistan's products into the EU.

Peksa said that she also hoped to see the long-stalled Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (CPA) discussed between Turkmenistan and the EU in March.

Turkmenistan remains the only post-Soviet country with which the European Union is yet to finalise a partnership agreement. The EU has been delaying the ratification of this deal since 1998 because it was concerned about Turkmenistan's human rights.

Since 1991, when the country gained independence from the Soviet Union, it has maintained a strict neutrality.

Since Berdymukhamedov inherited the presidency from his father Gurbanguly in?2022, he has intensified diplomatic relations with Western nations, Russia, China, and Central Asian neighbors. Reporting by Marat Gürt, Writing and editing by Felix Light
