There were 13 individuals on board the Volgoneft 212 tanker, which was damaged and ran aground, and 14 individuals on a 2nd ship, the Volgoneft 239, was drifting after sustaining damage, the ministry stated.

The ministry said more than 50 individuals and equipment including an Mi-8 helicopter and a rescue tugboat had actually been released.

Russia's Kommersant newspaper reported that the Volgoneft 212 tanker was bring about 4,300 tonnes of fuel oil.
