Albania to create a Vatican-style, Bektashi state in Tirana

Albania will produce a. sovereign Muslim state in Tirana for the Bektashi religious. order, along the lines of the Vatican in Rome, to maintain and. promote religious tolerance, Prime Minister Edi Rama stated on. Saturday.

If developed, the enclave for the Islamic Sufi order would be. among the world's tiniest states, and would have its own. administration however no tax or authorities and would not challenge. the sovereignty of Albania, Rama stated.

The history of the Bektashi is in itself an enforcing call. to provide the holy seat of the Bektashi World Center a status. comparable to that of the Vatican, Rama said throughout an event to. mark the 95th anniversary of the relocation of the holy seat to. Albania from Turkey.

Rama stated the symbolic state would be without walls,. without cops, without an army, without taxes or other. attributes, however a head office, a spiritual state.

He did not give details on timing and the Albanian. parliament would need to back the plan.

Established in the Ottoman Empire in the thirteenth century as. a spin-off of Sufism, the Bektashi order has been headquartered. in Albania considering that 1929 after the newly created Turkish Republic. of Kemal Ataturk prevented it from practising.

Rama said in 2015 that Albania planned to create a state. in the eastern part of the country's capital as a spiritual. centre for the Bektashis, who are scattered throughout the area in. Kosovo and North Macedonia along with in Albania.

About 10% of the nation's population is Bektashi according. to the last census.
