India scraps windfall tax on unrefined items, air travel fuel, gas, diesel exports

India has scrapped a. windfall tax on crude products, aviation turbine fuel, and. petrol and diesel exports, a federal government order stated on Monday.

Reuters had reported on Thursday, pointing out a federal. federal government source, that India's finance ministry was assessing. the importance of the tax.

Enforced in July 2022, the windfall tax was a special levy on. domestic petroleum production that was introduced after an increase. in international crude rates, to catch income from windfall gains. made by producers.

It also used to some items refined from crude,. including air travel turbine fuel, and fuel and diesel exports.

Tarun Kapoor, a consultant to the Indian prime minister, stated. in October the finance ministry would examine scrapping the. windfall tax on domestic unrefined output as a decline in international oil. rates indicated there was little justification for maintaining it.

The Indian federal government gathered 130 billion rupees through. the windfall tax in 2023-24, compared to 250 billion rupees a. year back, according to a government source.

In the financial year so far, the government has collected. 60 billion rupees through the tax, the source said. The. federal government does not launch a breakdown of windfall tax. collections.
