US Communications Agency to Explore Alternatives to GPS Systems

Federal Communications Commission of the United States announced on Wednesday that it will vote next month on exploring alternatives to GPS. National security concerns were raised over relying solely on GPS, a system vital to modern life.

GPS (global positioning system) is the short name for a network satellites and receivers used to position, navigate and time on Earth by everything from cars and ships to planes.

Brendan Carr, FCC chairperson, said: "Continue to rely on a single system so heavily leaves us vulnerable." "We must develop redundant technologies."

Reports have surfaced of a global increase in GPS interference, especially since 2023. This is known as spoofing, and has raised fears that planes could be more likely to crash if they veer from their course.

"Disruptions in GPS could undermine the nation's economy and national security." Carr noted that the risks to our existing system were only growing. He also mentioned President Donald Trump's and a group of bipartisan lawmakers who have been calling for action since years.

The FCC will vote March 27 on an inquiry to examine other Positioning, Navigation, and Timing systems (PNTs) that can complement or alternative to GPS.

Carr stated that "we hope this effort will involve stakeholders from government and industry in order to encourage the development and adoption of new PNT solutions and technologies."

GPS is a very important navigation tool in aviation. It has replaced expensive devices on the ground that used radio beams for guiding planes toward landing. However, it is relatively easy to use because GPS relies upon signals transmitted from satellites orbiting in a medium Earth orbit.

Last year, the Federal Aviation Administration announced that it was working on authentication capabilities for global navigation satellite systems with international and interagency partners to stop spoofing. (Reporting and editing by Alistair Bell; David Shepardson)
