Southwest Airlines will charge $35 for the first bag after ending its free baggage policy

Southwest Airlines announced Tuesday that it would charge $35 per checked bag, and $45 per second, with the exception of certain elite customers. This ends the airline's policy of free luggage.

Southwest announced in March that it would charge some customers for the "bags Fly Free" policy, and look for ways to increase its profits.

Southwest Airlines was the only major U.S. airline that allowed its customers to check two bags for free.

The airline will continue to give two free checked baggage to customers who have the A-List Preferred status or pay the highest premium fares.

Customers who have the A-List loyalty status will receive one bag free. Passengers who use the carrier's co-branded credit cards will receive a free checked bag.

The Wall Street Journal broke the story on Tuesday.

Southwest Airlines canceled its financial projections for 2017 due to the uncertainty caused by President Trump's trade conflict.
