Cebu Pacific, Philippines' airline, will lease two jets from Saudi flyadeal during lean months

Cebu Pacific, a Philippine budget airline, said Wednesday that it will lease two Airbus A320 aircraft to Saudi budget carrier Flyadeal in order to generate revenues from its excess capacity when the Southeast Asian nation's low-season begins.

Cebu Pacific, in the "wet-lease" agreement, will rent its narrow-body aircraft to flyadeal, including the pilots, maintenance and crew, during the Philippines' slow months of July and August. This is a busy time for the Saudi carrier.

At a flyadeal press conference, CEO Steven Greenway stated that "we have this natural synergy where my peak isn't his and vice versa."

Cebu Pacific CEO Michael Szucs stated that this was the first time budget airline had leased its planes. He also said that more aircraft would be available for lease as new orders of its fleet arrive.

Szucs stated, "We are testing the water."

Cebu Pacific has agreed to purchase a minimum 70 Airbus A321neo planes to meet its fleet requirements for the long term.

Flyadeal also plans to expand in Southeast Asia, after purchasing 10 A330neo wide body jets.

Greenway has said that three of the ten aircraft ordered by the company will be operational by July 2027. Two more planes are expected to arrive towards the end of the year.

Greenway told an interview that Southeast Asia was the main destination of these aircraft, pointing to the Philippine, Malaysian, and Indonesian markets.

He added, "Obviously, Cebu Pacific's partnership with the Philippines makes it interesting."

Greenway stated that Flyadeal may bring Philippine traffic to the Gulf, including overseas workers, pilgrims for the Haj, and other travellers. (Reporting and editing by John Mair, Jamie Freed and Mikhail Flores)
