Air India's long and storied history, as it faces the crisis of Ahmedabad crash

Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which is one of the largest carriers in its own country, crashed on Thursday, moments after takeoff, on a flight between Ahmedabad and London Gatwick. At least 30 people were killed.

The airline's history is rich and varied.

Found in 1932

Air India was founded by JRD Tata, an entrepreneur in 1932. The Indian government took over the airline in 1953. Years of mismanagement, coupled with a growing competition, led to soaring debts for the airline under the Indian government.

Tata Group acquired the airline in a $2.2billion deal in 2022 and has been trying to restore its fortunes ever since.

FLEET ROUTES

Air India flies to 41 domestic and 43 international destinations. Air India operates 191 aircraft as of May. These are a mixture of narrow and wide body models, both Airbus and Boeing.

The only airline in Australia that flies non-stop from Australia to Europe, North America and beyond.

Air India Express is its low-cost airline, and it flies to 55 international destinations, focusing on the Middle East.

MEGA MERGER

Tata Group has merged Air India Express and Vistara with its existing carriers AIX Connect and Air India in November, to create India's second largest airline group behind IndiGo.

Air India has merged into Vistara while Air India Express has combined with AIX Connect. These airlines control roughly 30% of the domestic Indian aviation market.

Singapore Airlines, who started Vistara, a full-service carrier, with the Tatas is 25% of the combined Air India Group.

Record AIRBUS and BOEING Order

Air India, in February 2023, placed the largest order ever for aircraft from Airbus or Boeing. The order was 470 jets.

In December of last year, Airbus received an additional 100 orders.

Air India has been reported to be in negotiations with Airbus or Boeing over a new major aircraft deal, which includes 200 additional single-aisle airplanes.

MULTI-MILLION DOLLARS RETROFIT

In mid-2023, the company unveiled its new logo and branding as well as a new livery for their planes.

The airline also began a $400-million refurbishment plan for its interiors. However, delays in the supply chain have hampered this project. The airline has retrofitted the majority of its single-aisle Airbus A320 neo jets and is currently updating its Boeing 777 and 787 long-haul jets.
