Senators: Texas airport closure shows FAA-Pentagon disconnection.

Senators from the United States criticized the government on Thursday.

At a hearing, he said that the incident revealed an unacceptable "lack" of coordination between the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Pentagon.

The FAA announced abruptly that the airport would be closed for 10 days late Tuesday night, stranding air travelers and disrupting medical evacuation flights. This was an unprecedented move involving only one airport. The agency lifted the closure early Wednesday morning after reversing course.

The sudden closure caused confusion among the 4 million passengers who use the airport each year. Different officials from different agencies have given varying, and at times conflicting, accounts of what led up to the closure.

At the hearing originally intended to investigate the FAA and DOD, Senator Maria Cantwell said, "We need to solve this problem."

According to anonymous airline and government officials, the FAA shut down the airspace because of concerns that the Army's?counter-drone system might pose a risk to commercial air traffic.

The FAA informed the Pentagon on Tuesday night that it would close the airport for 10 days, unless officials from the defense department agreed to?delay testing of the military systems. FAA officials stated that the required safety analysis was not completed.

Three U.S. Military officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity said that U.S. Customs and Border Protection was using the technology without any issues prior to Tuesday's shut down and expressed confusion about why it was necessary.

The Pentagon hasn't publicly explained what happened.

"THIS CANNOT HAPPEN AGAIN"

Sean Duffy, the U.S. Transportation secretary who supervises the FAA said that the closure was prompted by a drone 'incursion' by a Mexican drug gang.

A drone sighting at an airport will usually result in a short pause to traffic and not a complete closure. Pentagon reports that there are over 1,000 incidents of this nature each month along the U.S.-Mexico Border.

Ben Ray Lujan is a New Mexico Democrat Senator who said that it was unacceptable for the administration of President Donald Trump to not answer questions regarding 'what happened.

Lujan stated at the hearing that "they said they would shut down the air traffic for ten days without calling White House or Department of Defense." "We need people to coordinate... This can't happen anymore."

Senator Ted Cruz from Texas, who chairs the Commerce Committee said he wanted a classified briefing in order to better understand what had happened. This could happen as early as Thursday.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) concluded last month that systemic FAA failings were responsible for the fatal 2025 accident. The NTSB made dozens of recommendations for both the FAA as well as the Army.

NTSB Chair Jennifer?Homendy said to the committee that the Army's and FAA's failure to work together properly began years before the fatal accident.

She said, "I'll say that there has been miscommunication or no communication between the Army and FAA at least for years." Reporting by David Shepardson in Washington and Idrees Al, Editing by Scott Malone and Rod Nickel
