Unauthorized boarding of a tanker in the Singapore Strait results in injury to a crew member.

The port authority of Singapore said that a crew member aboard a chemical tanker registered in Singapore was injured Friday due to "unauthorised boarding". He is currently being evacuated for medical treatment.

According to a press release from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the incident occurred Friday morning on the vessel BASSET in the Singapore Strait.

It also said that it would be issuing safety messages to vessels, encouraging them to keep a watchful eye on their surroundings. However, the exact nature of the unauthorised boarder was not disclosed. It did not respond immediately to a comment request.

Armed robbery on ships is not unusual. According to the regional maritime security center in Singapore, there were 61 incidents in the Singapore Strait in 2018, compared to only 58 cases in 2023.

The statement stated that the vessel was currently anchored within Singaporean waters, and the Singapore Police Coast Guard as well as the Singapore Civil Defence Force had been activated in order to provide assistance.

The port authority said that all BASSET crew members were present and the safety of the navigation in the Singapore Strait had not been affected. (Reporting and editing by Edwina G. Gibbs; Reporting by Xinghui K.)
