Vietnam supports Cambodia's Mekong Canal, calls for cooperation to reduce impacts

Vietnam's foreign ministry stated on Thursday that it supports Cambodia's plans to build a Mekong river basin canal to reach the Cambodian coastline. It would also like to get involved in the search for solutions to any negative impacts of the canal.

The Funan Techo Canal is a $1.7 billion project, which, according to Cambodian officials, will divert much of Cambodian maritime traffic away from Vietnam.

Doan Khac viet, a spokesperson for the ministry's media office, said: "We respect and support the decision of the government to construct the canal."

He added, "We'd like to work with Cambodia on research and assessment of impact so we have the right solutions to minimize impact."

Conservationists, as well as Vietnamese officials, have repeatedly dismissed environmental concerns over the new canal. They claim that it could cause further harm to the Mekong Delta region, an important rice producing area.
