Singapore bunker standard for methanol and ammonia by 2025

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore announced on Wednesday that new standards for bunkering methanol and amonia would be developed in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

The largest vessel refuelling centre in the world is preparing to increase its use of alternative bunker fuels that shippers may consider using to reduce carbon emissions.

The standards will include safety procedures, crew competency, and custody transfer requirements to ensure safe bunkering and handling of fuels, MPA stated in a press release issued at SIBCON 2024.

There are no standards or guidelines in place yet for these fuels. Some of them are even more toxic than fuel oil used today for shipping.

In April of this year, 29 new companies in the shipping and bunker industries will join a maritime training facility. This is on top of the 22 existing partner companies.

MPA said that there is a strong need for enhanced and new training courses to fill the skill gaps of operating vessels powered with zero or near-zero emission fuels.
