Singapore top marine fuel supplier Equatorial expands fleet

A company executive said this week that Singapore's largest bunker-fuel supplier Equatorial Marine Fuel will expand its tanker fleet. The company expects to receive its first IMO Type 2 chemical bunker tanks before the end 2024, and three others in 2025.

Choong Sheen Mao is the chief operating officer of Equatorial Marine Fuel.

Choong stated that half of Equatorial’s fleet currently delivers marine fuel oil, while the other halves deliver marine gasoil.

The company is expanding its fleet as it looks to potential business opportunities with the supply of lower-carbon fuels.

Choong said late Tuesday on the sidelines the Argus B24 forum which took place during the week of SIBCON.

Type 2 chemical tankers can carry biofuel blends with up to 100% biofuel. According to MARPOL maritime regulations, biofuels with a content of more than 24 percent biofuel can only be transported by type 2 chemical tanks.

Choong explained that the first tankers are likely to deliver conventional fuels, as demand for alternative fuels such as methanol or biofuel is still low.

In Singapore, which is the largest ship-refuelling hub in the world, Equatorial was the number one marine bunker supplier in terms of volume in both 2022 and 2023. In late 2022, the company began selling marine biofuel.
