Rio Tinto releases ports in Western Australia due to Cyclones

Rio Tinto said that it has started removing iron ore from two Western Australian port due to tropical storms. This is impacting the efforts to repair the infrastructure damaged by a cyclone a month ago.

Rio Tinto's spokesperson stated via email that "as per procedure, we sent ships out to sea from Cape Lambert Port over the weekend, and Dampier Port late last night to avoid high seaswells and waves created by Tropical Cyclone Taliah" and Tropical Cyclone Vince.

Rio Tinto warned that disruptions in its rail operations could affect its iron ore shipments for the first quarter of this year following heavy rainfall along Western Australia’s Pilbara coast due to Tropical Cyclone Sean.

The miner stated that clearing the ports was compounding system problems and high stock levels, while repair work continues on the East Intercourse Dumper which was affected by flood waters caused by Tropical Cyclone Sean in January.
