Eleclink drags down Getlink's core profit

Getlink, a transport and infrastructure company, reported a decline in its core profit for the first half of this year as growth in Eurotunnel's and Europorte's activities was offset by a decrease in Eleclink’s contribution.

Why it's important

Eleclink's sales in the first half of 2019 fell by more than 50%, to 92 millions euros ($108million), compared with 185 million euro in the first six months of 2024. This is due to the combination of expected normalisation on electricity markets and business interruptions.

Getlink has continued to be resilient despite the closure of Eleclink, and Eurostar's passenger traffic increased by 4%, to more than 5 million passengers. This is higher than the first-half record of 2024.

The freight segment, however, suffered from a lacklustre economy in Britain, and a very competitive cross-Channel marketplace, with a slight decline of 2%.

The net profit of the company fell by 35%, to 113 millions euros.

CONTEXT

Getlink was also affected by the interruptions for maintenance and the suspension of Eleclink’s electrical interconnector from France to Britain between September 25, and February 10, due to a damaged wire.

Yann Leriche is the CEO. "Our results, as expected, are down. This is due largely to the decline in spreads and the normalisation of energy and electricity markets. It's also because we had to interrupt the cable twice. Reporting by Johan Bodinier, Gdansk. Editing by Lincoln Feast.
