Russia savagely attacks Ukraine's electricity grid before talks

Officials said that Russian forces had pounded Ukrainian energy infrastructure in the days before a new round of peace talks, killing three workers and leaving tens thousands without heat or electricity.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy, President of Ukraine, condemned the overnight attacks on 12 Ukrainian regions. The strikes occurred hours before scheduled trilateral talks in Geneva between Kyiv and Moscow.

Zelenskiy, writing on?X and calling for "justice" and "strength", said that the combined strike was calculated to cause as much harm as possible to our sector of energy.

This winter, Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukrainian energy facilities, knocking out heating and power.

The deputy minister of energy in Ukraine said that the three workers died when a Russian drone hit their car near Sloviansk Power Plant, in an area where Moscow wants Kyiv ceded in exchange for peace.

DTEK, a private energy company, says that the power infrastructure supplying Ukraine’s strategic Black Sea Port city of Odesa has suffered "incredibly severe" damages.

The?company posted on social media that repairs would?take quite a while to get the equipment back to a working order.

Artem Nekrasov, deputy energy minister, said that homes in five regions suffered from 'power cuts' as a result if the strikes. He also reported disruptions in heating in Odesa, the regional capital of a 'northern Ukraine, near the Russian border.

Ukraine's air force reported that Russia launched nearly 400 drones, and 29 missiles. The majority were destroyed, but the air force added that 13 Ukrainian targets were also hit. (Reporting and editing by Max Hunder; Ros Russell, Timothy Heritage and Ros Russell)
