Heathrow Airport in the UK sees passenger numbers rise 0.6% this year

Heathrow Airport in Britain said that it expects to see 85 million passengers this year. This represents a 0.6% increase as the airport enters a "key year" for its 44.62 billion pounds ($33 billion) expansion bid.

Heathrow is the busiest hub of Europe. The finance minister, Rachel Reeves, gave the go-ahead to build a runway last year. This began a planning process that would take years. Lawmakers will vote on this issue in 2026.

The airport is owned by Ardian France, Qatar Investment Authority, Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund and others. On Wednesday, it said that the framework for incentivizing private investment was needed before the expansion could be approved.

Owners received a total of 550 million pounds in dividends during the financial period.

The airport's revenue is expected to increase by 3.6 billion pounds ($4.9billion) compared to last year when 84.5 million passengers travelled through the airport.

Heathrow Airport, located west of London is Europe's most busy airport. It operates at close to capacity. Heathrow's two runways are compared to four at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris,?Frankfurt Airport and six at Amsterdam Schiphol.

Planning consent is required by 2029. Flights on Heathrow's new runway are expected to begin in 2035. (1 dollar = 0.7395 pounds). (Reporting and editing by Paul Sandle, Sarah Young)
