Yemen Houthis attack Contship Ono and two US destroyers

Houthi, a Yemeni movement aligned with Iran and based in Yemen, said that on Wednesday it targeted two U.S. destroyers as well as a vessel identified as Contship Ono located in the Red Sea.

Yahya Saree, a spokesperson for the Houthi military group, said that the Houthi Air Force targeted the U.S. destroyer Cole using drones as well as the U.S. destruction Laboon by using ballistic missiles.

Saree said that the Liberian-flagged Contship Ono container ship was attacked with drones and ballistic missiles in Red Sea.

Since November, Iran-aligned Houthi militants launched drones and missiles on important shipping routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. They did this to demonstrate their support for Palestinians.

It has caused shippers to redirect cargo on longer, more expensive trips around southern Africa. This has also stoked concerns that the Israel/Hamas conflict could destabilize the Middle East.

Israel's frequency of attacks appeared to decrease after it struck military targets in Yemen near the port city Hodeidah on 20 July, killing 6 people and seriously wounding over 80 others. This was a day following a drone attack by an Iranian-backed group that hit Tel Aviv, Israel's economic center.

The Yemeni group gathered on August 4, 2018.
