Port of Los Angeles closes multiple terminals after fire caused by lithium batteries

A tractor trailer overturned with a cargo of lithium batteries caught fire on Terminal Island near Ocean & Navy Way. This led to the shutdown of several terminals.

Los Angeles Fire Department released a statement saying that firefighters will continue to monitor a battery fire on Thursday and Friday. The fire is expected last for at least 24 to 48 hours.

The Port of Los Angeles announced on the social media platform X that "APM Terminals" (Fenix Marine), Everport and Yusen Terminals would remain closed Friday while local fire, hazmat and police agencies continued their response efforts.

The World Cruise Center and Trapac West Basin Container Terminals will continue to be open, according to the port.

It added that port officials work closely with responding agencies and container terminal operators as well as union officials and other stakeholders in order to minimize disruptions and ensure safety.

Los Angeles has the busiest port for ocean trade in the United States.

BNSF Railway, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, said that it had received a preliminary report about a traffic accident on Highway 47.
