Fico, Slovakian Fico: Gas transit talks with Ukraine include Azerbaijan gas

Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, said that the European Commission was in discussions about restarting transit through Ukraine and the possibility of shipping Azerbaijani natural gas.

Fico, who had threatened to block any final statement if it didn't include the issue of Ukraine stopping gas transit, got the mention of the issue in the Thursday conclusions of the European Union summit.

The Slovakian government stopped receiving Russian gas via Ukraine by the end of 2012 after Kyiv refused to renew a contract with Moscow in an attempt to deny Russia revenue for its invasion.

Fico and Slovakia were angered by the move, which affected Slovakia's transit operations and forced them to find alternative routes for supplies. Fico is seeking to resume the flow of goods and says that the stoppage has hurt prices and the competitiveness of the EU.

Fico stated that the possibility of transiting Azerbaijani Gas through Ukraine via swap operations is being discussed. He said that the economy minister will discuss it at a meeting in Brussels, on Friday.

In the conclusions of the Thursday summit, EU leaders called for the Commission, Slovakia, and Ukraine to "intensify their efforts to find workable solutions to gas transit issues, while taking the concerns raised in Slovakia into consideration."

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine 2022, the EU has been trying to reduce its remaining dependence on energy imported from Russia.

Slovakia stated in January that it considered the option to ship gas from Azerbaijan through Ukraine back on the table. Slovakia's largest gas buyer SPP signed an initial pilot contract with Azerbaijan to purchase natural gas.

Since the Ukraine transit stop, Slovakia relies on supplies from Hungary. Hungary mainly gets Russian gas via TurkStream and Balkans. (Reporting and editing by Aiden Lewis in Prague, with Jason Hovet reporting from Prague)
