Lawyer for wife of captain who seized Venezuelan-linked tanker says that Captain is now aboard US vessel

A lawyer for the wife of the captain said that the captain was taken from British territorial waters to a U.S. Coast Guard vessel.

U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Military Special Forces, with a judicial seize warrant, captured the Russian flagged Marinera on the Atlantic Ocean near Iceland, after pursuing the vessel for over two weeks, as part of Washington’s efforts to stop Venezuelan oil exports.

The tanker was then moved to an area?off of the coasts of Scotland.

Aamer Anwar is the lawyer for Natia Dzadzama's husband, Avtandil Kalandadze.

COURT ORDER REVOKED

Anwar stated that on Monday, the Scottish court issued a temporary order to prevent the captain from being removed pending the judicial review of the detention. However, the order was revoked by the court early Tuesday morning after it was determined that Kalandadze had already left British territorial waters.

He said that "our client's judicial appeal can no longer be enforced" because her husband had been essentially abducted by U.S. authorities on Scottish and British soil.

According to a British government spokesperson, at the request from U.S. authorities crew members were allowed to disembark and continue their journey. They would be processed according to immigration and legal requirements.

This government is committed to deterring, disrupting, and degrading Russia's shadow fleet. We are increasing our response against shadow vessels, along with our allies, and will continue to do this," said the spokesperson, referring specifically to ships that transport crude oil under sanctions.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Scottish government did not immediately comment.

Anwar confirmed that the 26 other crew members of the Marinera (?formerly known by the name Bella-1) had been processed in a British Army centre at Inverness. Anwar stated that five of the crew members chose to travel to "the United States" while the other 26 made alternative travel arrangements back to their home country. Anwar said that last week Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, said Moscow expected the U.S. government to release the crew members. He said the crew included two Russians as well as Ukrainians Georgians and Indians. (Reporting and editing by Alex Richardson and Rod Nickel; Reporting by Michael Holden)
