Russian air strike knocks out heat and power to thousands of Ukrainians

Officials said that Russia bombarded?Ukraine overnight with ballistic missiles and drones, further damaging its energy system. Tens of thousands of people in Kyiv, Dnipro, and Odesa were left without heat, electricity, and water.

Russia's winter campaign of strikes against Ukraine's electricity grid has intensified, forcing major cities to endure long periods of darkness and cold in freezing temperatures.

Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, stated that the city's apartment buildings lacked heating Thursday, after the latest attack cut off the supply to 2,600 high rises. This is on top 1,100 apartments already affected by previous strikes.

DTEK, a private energy company, said that more than 100,000 families are without electricity. It did not specify the exact location, but claimed one of their thermal power plants was targeted.

Klitschko confirmed that two people were injured in the attack, which hit Kyiv and also a residential building.

Ukraine's airforce said that Russia launched 24 ballistic and cruise missiles as well as 219 drones over night. It said that air defences neutralised or downed 16 missiles and 219 drones.

KEY CITIES IN ODESA AND DNIPRO ARE ALSO HIT

Oleksiy Kuleba, Deputy prime minister, stated that the attack in southern Odesa disrupted the power supply, leaving nearly 300,000 people without water. He also said that 200 buildings at the Black Sea port, a strategic location on the Black Sea, were without heat.

Serhiy lysak, the chief of military administration in Ukraine, said that the attack damaged an apartment and ignited a fire which engulfed a market within the city. One person was injured.

Oleksandr Ganzha, the regional governor, said that a missile-drone strike in Dnipro injured four people including a 4-year-old and a baby.

Prosecutors said that two people were killed and six others wounded in a terrorist attack in Lozova, the railway hub in northeastern Kharkiv near the border with Russia.

Moscow denies that it deliberately targeted civilians in the war, despite the fact that its 'attacks' have killed thousands since February 2022 when it first invaded. Ukraine has also 'hit civilian targets during the war in?Russia and Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine, but on a much smaller scale.

Blow to Peace Efforts

Andrii Sybiha, Ukrainian Foreign Minister, condemned the attack for undermining the peace effort led by U.S. president Donald Trump to end the 4-year war.

The U.S.-sponsored trilateral talks between Ukraine and Russia failed to resolve major differences, and Moscow continued its offensive on the battlefield and with attacks against Ukrainian cities.

"Each strike like this is a blow to peace efforts that aim to end the war." "Russia must be made to de-escalate and take diplomacy more seriously," Sybiha wrote in X.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the Ukrainian president, said that the U.S. must put more pressure on Russia to bring the war to an end before summer. (Reporting and editing by Michael Perry, Ros Russell and Ron Popeski; Reporting by Anna Pruchnicka and Ron Popeski)
