Finland is seeing an increase in threats to the Baltic Sea's subsea infrastructure

Kai Mykkanen, Minister of Environment and Climate in Finland, said that Finland has experienced an increase in threats to subsea structures in the Baltic Sea region in recent years.

Finland and Estonia signed an agreement on Friday to improve the security of the joint subsea network, including power and telecommunications cable as well as Balticconnector Gas Pipeline that was damaged one year ago.

Continue to investigate

The Estonian Police is leading the investigation into the damage caused to the subsea communications links at the same time as the pipeline accident.

Both police forces have not yet provided their conclusions.

Mykkanen stated that "we've seen the increase in threats to the security of energy transfer routes over the last few years, particularly under the Finnish Gulf, and the Baltic Sea region as a whole."

Mykkanen stated that the increased cooperation would mean the two countries will join forces to enhance technical surveillance, patrolling, and repair capabilities of subsea equipment. Essi Lehto, Anne Kauranen (reporting), Stine Jacobsen, Terje Solsvik (editing)
