Smugglers from France are now moving migrants to the UK via Belgium

Authorities?say that smugglers have been using the Belgian coast to transport migrants into?Britain more and more since French border controls were tightened.

An Berger, spokesperson for the police, said that although numbers are still comparatively small, 17 such departures have occurred this year. This compares to no more than 2 per year since 2020. Britain and France both have cracked down on the small boats that bring thousands of migrants across the English Channel each year, for example, introducing a 'one in, one-out' scheme.

Chris Borowski, spokesperson for Frontex at the EU border agency Frontex, said that the shift from French to Belgian shores was the most important one.

Borowski stated that smugglers are using so-called taxi boats. The vessel leaves from a quiet beach in Belgium with a small group and travels up the coast to pickup points before crossing into the UK.

Authorities say migrants pay smugglers about 2,000 Euros ($2,300), but there is no guarantee that they will board a boat. They may also face abuse, including sexual violence and threats.

Berger said that volunteers pulled 19 people out of a sinking boat during a nighttime operation on the Belgian coast in De Haan. Only one person had a life jacket.

With better weather coming, we can expect more attempts.

Anneleen Van Bossuyt, Belgian Minister of Migration, responded via email to a question about the number of boats leaving.

Last year, 41,500 people were detected crossing the Channel by small boats on the France-Britain Route.

According to the University of Oxford Migration Observatory, around 2,200 people crossed the border in the first two month of 2026.
