Britain invests $71 million to expand offshore wind in Scottish port

The government announced on Wednesday that the UK will invest $55.7 million ($71.45) to expand the Port of Cromarty Firth, in Scotland, to make it a hub of floating offshore wind.

Britain's goal is to decarbonise the electricity sector largely by 2030. This will require an enormous increase in renewable energy like offshore wind.

The floating turbines are less visible and can be placed further out to sea. This is where the wind speed will be higher.

The technology costs of floating wind turbines are currently higher than those for fixed turbines, and few ports can accommodate the large structures.

This initial financial support from the UK Government paves the path for the port's match-funding to be secured from other investors. The port is expected to become operational at the beginning of 2028," said a statement by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
