France seizes ten tonnes of cocaine at Dunkirk port

A source from the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed on Tuesday that French authorities had seized 10 tonnes (tonnes) of cocaine at the port of Dunkirk during the weekend.

French media reported the haul as the largest ever in metropolitan France. It equated to almost a fifth of the cocaine seized during the past year. The prosecutor refused to comment and provided no additional details.

French media Actu 17 reported the drugs were hidden inside containers with an estimated value of around 320 million Euros ($339 millions). The local daily La Voix du Nord stated that the shipment was from South America.

In February, the interior ministry reported that 53.5 tonnes of cocaine had been confiscated in France in 2024. This is a 130% rise from the 23.2 tons seized by 2023.

Data from the Interior Ministry shows that cannabis seizures in France dropped by 19%, to 101 tonnes, in 2024. In 2023 they were 124.7 tonnes.

According to the European Union Drugs Agency, cocaine is second only to cannabis in terms of illicit drug use in Europe.

According to the EUDA 2024 Report, in 2022, EU members reported 84,000 cocaine seizure, which amounted to 323 tons - a new record for six years - up from 303 tons in 2021.

Three European countries accounted for 68% of total quantities seized, namely Belgium with 111 tons, the Netherlands with 51,5 tonnes and Spain with 56,3 tonnes. This reflects their importance as entrypoints for cocaine trafficked into Europe.
