China to eliminate momentary export control of specific consumer drones

China will change drone export controls from Sept. 1, consisting of abolishing short-lived export control procedures of specific customer drones, the commerce ministry said on Wednesday.

In a statement, the ministry stated it would also adjust the control standards for some essential elements of unmanned aircraft, such as infrared imaging devices and lasers for target sign.

The modification would help safeguard the security and stability of worldwide industrial and supply chains, a ministry spokesperson said.

In 2015, China announced export controls on some drones and drone-related equipment, stating it wished to safeguard nationwide security and interests in the middle of escalating tension with the United States over access to the technology.

The procedures last year consisted of a two-year short-term export control on some customer drones, and no civilian drones were allowed to be exported for military functions.

The ministry then said it chose to appropriately expand the drone export control, without targeting any particular nation and area.
