South Korea's MFG purchases about 65,000 tonnes of corn, traders claim

European traders reported that South Korea's Major Feedmill Group purchased approximately 65,000 metric tonnes of animal feed corn in a tender international seeking up to 144,000 tons on Thursday.

A consignment of goods was purchased at a cost and freight rate (c&f), estimated to be $257.15 per ton, plus an extra $1.25 per ton for port unloading.

Columbia Grain International was thought to be the seller, and corn arrived in South Korea around 31 May.

Shipping was requested between April 27 and 16 if corn comes from the U.S. Pacific Northwest Coast, between April 7 to April 26 if it comes from the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, April 2-21 if it comes from South America, or between April 12 and 1 if coming from South Africa.

A second consignment weighing up to 70,000 tonnes was due for arrival in South Korea on June 7. However, no purchase has been reported.

The reports reflect the opinions of traders, and it is possible to estimate prices and volume later.

Traders report that some Asian buyers have made corn purchases in anticipation of a possible market shock due to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's new estimates of U.S. sowings later on Thursday.

Nonghyup Feed Inc. (NOFI), a South Korean animal food manufacturer, also purchased approximately 133,000 tons in a Thursday international auction. Michael Hogan, reporting; David Goodman, editing.
