Spain thinking about assistance for prospective Sidenor quote for Talgo

The Spanish federal government is thinking about financial support for the partial or overall purchase of train manufacturer Talgo by Basque steel maker Sidenor, Transport Minister Oscar Puente stated.

We are here to help Talgo on its path of looking for more industrial capacity and a brand-new investor composition, which will also offer it stability in the future, Puente informed reporters at a conference about mobility in Madrid on Tuesday.

The central federal government might take part in the quote through state holding business SEPI, the minister stated, adding the regional Basque government might also chip in.

Last month, Sidenor said it was considering purchasing all or part of the train maker.

Hungarian consortium Ganz-Mavag earlier withdrew a tender deal for Talgo following the Spanish government's opposition to the offer.

Spokespeople at Sidenor and SEPI declined to comment. The Basque local government and Talgo did not instantly respond to ask for comment.
