US talks begin with Russia in Saudi Arabia, aiming for a Black Sea ceasefire

U.S. officials and Russian officials started talks in Saudi Arabia Monday to make progress toward a general ceasefire in Ukraine. Washington is aiming for a Black Sea agreement before reaching a larger agreement.

The talks follow U.S. discussions with Ukraine on Sunday. U.S. president Donald Trump is intensifying his efforts to end the conflict, which has lasted for three years, after speaking to both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy last week.

According to a source who was briefed about the preparations for the talks, the U.S. team would be led by Andrew Peek - a senior director of the White House National Security Council - and Michael Anton - a senior State Department representative.

The White House has stated that the goal of the talks will be to achieve a maritime truce in the Black Sea allowing free shipping.

Sergei Beseda will represent the Federal Security Service and Grigory Karasin is a former diplomat, who now chairs the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council. (Reporting and Editing by Toby Chopra).
