A Spanish judge summons top Sanchez allies to testify about alleged kickbacks in public works

A Spanish Supreme Court Judge on Thursday invited to testify a senior Socialist Party official of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, claiming that there were evidences that he had been involved in kickbacks by construction companies for the awarding of public contracts.

According to the leftist radio station Cadena Ser, in a report given to Judge Leopoldo Puente by the police, they said that they had an audio recording of Santos Cerdan discussing kickbacks and former Transport Minister Jose Luis Abalos. According to a statement from the court, the judge who unveiled the case on Friday, asked Cerdan to appear on June 25, after determining that "strong evidence" existed of Cerdan's possible involvement in the "improper allocation of public works for a price." The statement stated that such acts are crimes of criminal organization and bribery.

In the last year, a number of allegations have been made against Sanchez's fragile government. These include a high profile investigation into whether Begona Gómez used the status she held to influence her own business deals.

Cerdan said on Thursday that he could not recall the conversation.

In comments to the media in parliament, he stated: "I was not involved in such a conversation. This afternoon or tomorrow, once we have the contents of the Report, I will hold a press event to which you all are invited."

The Socialist Party said Wednesday that Cerdan is innocent and will provide explanations when the police report becomes public.

"Santos Cerdan did not participate in or influence the awarding public works contracts. In a late-Wednesday statement, it stated that he had never received any commissions for his work.
