UK's Drax signs 10-year tolling contract for 250MW of battery storage in England

The British power company Drax Group announced on Friday that it has signed a 10-year tolling agreement with Fidra Energy for a battery energy storage system of 250 megawatts. This is part of the company's broader battery business.

The contract, which is index to UK inflation, requires Drax to pay an annual tolling charge?over a 10-year period. Fidra will make a final investment decision by the end of the third quarter in 2026. The project is expected to begin operating in the second half of 2029.

Fidra will continue to bear the construction, maintenance and availability risks.

Tolling agreements allow one company to operate the energy assets of another for a fee without owning or building them.

Will Gardiner, CEO of Drax Group, said in a press release that "Flexible Generation Technologies like battery storage will support a safe, affordable and clean energy?system for British homes -and businesses".

Gardiner said that "our first BESS tolling contract is an important step towards our goal of a pipeline of gigawatt-scale battery storage opportunities."
