PostNL misses parcel volume expectations on damaging mix impacts

Dutch postal firm PostNL reported secondquarter parcel volumes listed below market expectations on Monday, struck by a damaging shift in the rate mix and weather that negatively affected the ecommerce market.

PostNL provided 92 million parcels throughout the quarter, around 6% more than in 2015, however listed below the 7% increase expected by experts.

Expense increases put pressure on our results as prepared for, CEO Herna Verhagen said in a declaration.

PostNL, which delivers parcels and letters across Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, stated it still expects its normalised profits before interest and tax (EBIT) to come in between 80 million and 110 million euros ($ 87.5 million and $ 120.2 million) and complimentary capital between break-even and favorable 40 million euros this year.

We are continuing to change our operations and offerings with a consistent focus on consumer excellence, rigorous cost control and capability management, targeting at a detailed margin growth, Verhagen said.

PostNL posted a normalised EBIT of 18 million euros for the 2nd quarter, stable compared to a year earlier, while experts were expecting 14 million euros typically.
