First overseas mission: Turkey sends a deep-sea drill ship to Somalia

Ankara sent its 'deep-sea exploration vessel Cagri Bey' to Somalia for what its energy minister said would be a 'first offshore exploration mission outside Ankara’s maritime zone.

Alparslan bayraktar, who described the move as "historic" in Turkey's exploration efforts for oil and gas, said that the vessel will?begin to drill in April at Curad-1?well offshore Somalia.

Bayraktar, at a Tasucu Port ceremony in Mersin province's southern province, said: "For the very first time our deep-sea?ship will be embarking on a?mission beyond (our maritime zone)."

He added that Cagri Bey would reach Somalia within a 45-day period, and it will be accompanied by three Turkish warships.

Bayraktar stated that Turkey hopes to produce 500,000 barrels of oil or hydrocarbons equivalent per day by 2028. Ankara also expects to double this amount through discoveries and production sharing agreements abroad. (Reporting and Editing by Can Sezer, Alexander Smith, and Ece Toksabay)
