Westinghouse and Seaspan Sign MoU to Expand Nuclear Tech in Canada

Westinghouse Electric, a nuclear power company, and Seaspan ULC announced on Thursday that they had signed a Memorandum of Understanding to expand nuclear projects around the world and in Canada.

Nuclear power is gaining renewed interest in the energy sector as a cleaner source of energy. Countries such as Italy and United Kingdom are looking at nuclear technology companies such as Westinghouse for their carbon emissions goals.

Westinghouse stated that Seaspan which offers services like shipbuilding and maintenance has the ability to manufacture key components such as pipe spools, steel structures and other parts used in nuclear reactors.

Westinghouse stated in a press release that Seaspan’s experience in delivering large-scale capital project such as nuclear reactors aligns well to the requirements of complex manufacturing projects.

Westinghouse said that the deal, which was backed by Cameco, Brookfield Renewable Partners and Brookfield Renewable Energy, strengthened its commitment to develop Canada's nucleonic supply chain in order to support its fleet of advanced nuclear reactors around the world.

The company is developing the AP1000 technology and the AP300 modular small reactors. These are smaller nuclear reactors that are said to be more cost-effective, quicker to deploy and easier than full-sized models. Reporting by Vallari Shrivastava, Bengaluru. Editing by Shreya Biwas
